Project
The goals was to create an app that uses the sensors on a mobile phone to help people get healthier. My team designed a pedometer integrated with a map that encouraged people to take longer, more scenic routes to hit their walking goals.

Role
Initial design concept, collaborated on interaction design and visual design

Project
We worked with Boeing Concept Center to imagine what a touchscreen flight deck might look like. Our team considered current challenges facing pilots, and designed a map-based system to help pilots track progress and determine the best alternate routes.

Role
Drove the design concept, use case scenario, and interaction design. Project management.

Project
I worked with the Mail, Calendar, and People product teams to create Windows 8 apps that embrace a modern, quiet interface and a conversational voice and tone.

Role
Owned the content plan for each app, covering the interface text needs, content for customer support, and inspirational content. Wrote all related content.

Project
Introduce people to key new parts of Windows 8 with an emphasis on being inspirational and reinforcing the brand. My Windows 8 topics included new key touch and mouse interactions, getting to know Windows 8, and the Windows Mail, People, and Calendar apps.

Role
Working closely with my product teams, I wroet all of the user interface text and errors messages. I also analyze research data to determine what people wanted to know about the new system, and then wrote video scripts and created the content for the web pages.

A few examples:  new touch gesturesnew mouse gestures and keyboard shortcuts, a new and improved contact list, Movie Moments FAQ

Mobile language-learning app

Project
Create an app that uses  location (restaurant, work, etc.)  to help people learn Mandarin. We used a Foursquare API to prompt people for their location and then showed them relevant  flashcards to reinforce learning and encourage them to use the vocabulary when out and about.

Highlights

  • Based on in situ interviews in Beijing and Seattle, decided native English speakers in China would benefit the most from an in-context language learning app.
  • In 8 weeks, our team wireframed and coded the app, and then kicked off month-long field research phase.
  • Based on data from app use, we determined that the design prompting users to learn and use words in context helped them learn more words than learning without context.

Role
Ran the field studies, analyzed the results, wireframed the entire app (Balsamiq), contributing author on CHI paper (2011)

Project
Improve attendance tracking for Jordanian and Palestinian refugees in a vocational training program. My goal was to create a system the assistant could run without supervision, while improving efficiency and accuracy.

Highlights

  • Conducted in situ field research to identify the best approach.
  • Due to time and budget constraints, turned an existing spreadsheet into a lightweight application using macros.
  • Ran iterative testing with users and taught them to troubleshoot problems. The new system gained them 10 hours a month and was still in use a year later.

Role
All research, design, and implementation
